The Nigerian government established the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) as a program to engage Nigerian graduates in nation-building and national development. In Nigeria, there is no mandatory military service; nevertheless, since 1973, polytechnic and university graduates have been expected to participate in the National Youth Service Corps program for a year.
