The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture on behalf of WorldFish seeks suitable applicants for the position below at the Institute’s Headquarters in Ibadan:

1. Job Title: Administrative and Finance Officer
Ref: IITA-HR-NRS2019-020
Location: Ibadan, Oyo
Recruitment Type: National (1-year renewable contract)

Duties

Successful candidate will among other things perform the following duties:

  • Manage project financial records and work with the host organization to prepare monthly expenditures by ensuring that the expenditures are justified in accordance with the relevant provisions of the financial authorizations before submitting to WF Bangladesh office for data capture in OCS;
  • Review project expenditure statements with Project Management and interact with Bangladesh lead Financial Management persons;
  • Ensure expenditures are made in line with project work plan and budget and establish clear tracking system of budget utilization;
  • Provide financial and logistical support to field activities and work closely with the project team to ensure funds disbursement to carry out project workshops are appropriately accounted for and liquidated timely;
  • Assist in preparing and reviewing project activity budgets for workshops or any other event and prepare advance requests for cash disbursement;
  • Review and monitor balance sheet accounts such as accounts receivables and payables and ensure timely liquidations of expenses;
  • Perform bank related tasks including monthly bank reconciliations and prepare monthly project cash flow projections and funds requests for submission for funds replenishments;
  • Provide general financial support as required for office management and project;
  • Ensure procurement and settlement of all invoices is done in a timely manner with assistance from the Project Administrative Assistant;
  • Prepare requests for supplier payments for submission to IITA and track payments to internal and external stakeholders;
  • Ensure proper filing of financial records;
  • Perform any other duties relevant to the Finance Officer’s role to ensure successful implementation of the project.

Qualification

  • B.Sc/HND in Finance, Accounting or related field with a minimum of five (5) years’ working experience preferably in a not-for-profit environment set up with understanding of project management.
  • Possession of ACCA, CIMA, CPA or its equivalent is an added advantage.

Competencies:
The ideal candidate must:

  • Have proven skill and experience in areas of financial management, organization, supervisory, financial accounting, analytical and donor contract interpretation. Understanding of project management is an advantage.
  • Be enthusiastic, independent, detail-minded, analytical and highly numerate.
  • Have good English communication skills (oral and written).
  • Be computer literate and proficiency in MS Excel and financial information systems; e.g. ERP, etc.
  • Have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a team-oriented multicultural environment.

2. Job Title: Payroll Officer

Job Description

Successful candidate will among other things perform the following duties:

  • Prepare, review and pay salaries of IITA NRS on monthly basis;
  • Review local payroll reports and attend to enquiries if any from staff;
  • Prepare and manage IITA Consultancy payrolls – Dollar and Naira;
  • Prepare and manage teacher’s payroll on monthly basis;
  • Process payroll reports into IITA accounting system;
  • Reconcile various payroll groups with timely follow up on any variation;
  • Manage staff vehicle maintenance allowance payment;
  • Review and coordinate payment of IT students, NYSC allowance and casual labour wages;

4. Job Title: Associate Scientist, Agricultural Markets Economist

Job Description

  • IITA seeks to recruit an Associate Scientist, Agricultural Markets Economist. The overall objective of the position is to lead strategic and applied research on market economics on IITA mandate crops and related activities.
  • The successful candidate will work in collaboration with other social scientists and biophysical scientists as needed such as agronomists, crop breeders, soil scientists, and IPM scientists.
  • He/she will be a member of the IITA Social Science and Agribusiness Core Competency. He/she will report to the Senior Agricultural Economist and to Director of Western Africa Hub.

Position Responsibilities 

  • Conduct market economic studies of commodities along the value chain.
  • Monitor economic changes in agriculture in relation to the markets and vice versa.
  • Devise methods and procedures to conduct different types of markets surveys and value chain assessments.
  • Create, as well as use, various econometric modeling techniques to develop forecasts.
  • Apply models of economic behavior to agricultural markets changes and developments.
  • Promote market development using experimental economic methods.
  • Develop business plans for project and activities in commodity value chains.
  • Establish and foster relationships and linkages with partners in national agricultural research and extension systems, the private sector and Advanced Research Institutes.
  • Provide technical backstopping and assistance in building capacity of national programs in research on market economics.
  • Mentor and backstop graduate students involved in related research.
  • Publish scientific outputs in peer reviewed IF journals and others (e.g. technical reports, IITA bulletins, or social media and books or book chapters).
  • Contribute to resource mobilization through development of concept notes and proposals in collaboration with others.

Educational Qualifications

  • The candidate should possess a PhD in Agricultural Economics, Applied Economics or other relevant fields from a highly recognized university.
  • He/she will demonstrate experience of at least three years in markets economic studies relating to agricultural issues, preferably in Africa.

  • Good knowledge of market studies.
  • Competence in the development of socio-economic and/or market surveys.
  • Ability to perform thoughtful critical analysis on market economics related data.

6. Job Title: Associate Scientist, Cassava Breeder

Background

  • The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) invites applications for the internationally recruited position of Associate Scientist, Cassava Breeder.
  • IITA seeks a highly motivated individual to work on cassava breeding using genomic selection within the Next Generation Cassava Breeding project. The primary activities include phenotypic and genotypic characterization of germplasm populations, describing genetic architecture of breeding traits and implementation of genomic selection and marker-assisted selection. Other opportunities are exploration of a large repository of genomic and phenotype cassava data (www.cassavabase.org) produced in the first phase of the project.
  • The Next Generation Cassava Breeding (www.nextgencassava.org) project aims to significantly increase the rate of genetic gain in cassava breeding and unlock the full potential of cassava, a staple crop central to food security and livelihoods across Africa. The project implements Genomic Selection to accelerate breeding cycles to develop high yielding, climate resilient, higher pest and disease resistant varieties that meet farmer and consumer demands.
  • As part of the NextGen project, you will get broad exposure and work closely with a global genomics and breeding community, including Cornell University, National Root Crops Research Institute in Nigeria, the National Crops Resources Research Institute in Uganda, Tanzania’s Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries, the International Center of Tropical Agriculture (CIAT), the Boyce Thompson Institute, and USDA-ARS.

Position Responsibilities

  • Develop improved cassava lines by working at the interphase between field breeding, genomic selection and marker assisted selection.
  • Implement multi-environment field trials to evaluate performance of new populations and make advancement decisions to support the breeding pipeline.
  • Carry out routine single and multi-environment mixed-model analysis of field trial data.
  • Carry out population genetic analyses to describe germplasm collections using genome-wide SNP markers.
  • Develop and validate new phenotyping platforms for end-user preferences cassava breeding (e.g. NIRS).
  • Mentor young breeders in the region on modernization of cassava breeding programs.
  • Publish research findings in peer reviewed journals.
  • Stay current on relevant technical advances.
  • Supervise PhD and MSc students with international universities.

Other Responsibilities:

  • This position will involve extensive travels within Nigeria and Africa to co-coordinate with the Project Leader, a cassava breeding community of practice in the national programs of DR Congo, Sierra Leone, Ghana, Zambia, Mozambique, Rwanda, Malawi and Cote d’Ivoire.
  • Provide technical backstopping in data analytical developments and process improvement for national partner programs in Nigeria, Uganda, Tanzania
  • Participate in resource mobilization with cassava research teams.

Educational Qualifications

  • The candidate should have a PhD degree in Plant or Animal Breeding or Agronomy with cognate experience of at least 5 years.
